CBD Extract

Cannabis used as medicine dates back to as early as 2900 BC. Though much time has passed, only very recently has modern society began to understand the plant's specific benefits. Encouraging research backed by a mass of anecdotal evidence has recently exploded public acceptance of cannabis and ultimately the star cannabinoid: Cannabidiol.

As research on CBD and it's neighboring cannabinoids progresses, it's clear that the natural 'whole plant' form of cannabis is most effective. The wide range of cannabinoids, terpenoids, fatty acids and other plant material that work together to provide a wide range of health benefits to the user via the entourage effect. Separated as a standalone molecule, CBD proves to be less effective.

What is CBD Extract?

CBD extract is an oily substance that ranges from a dark black paste to a honey color and consistency. This extract contains cannabis plant materials, waxes, fatty acids, cannabinoids, and terpenoids. This substance non-psychoactive compound designed to provide the maximum medical benefits. As a consumer product, you'll most commonly find an extract packaged in a syringe. This packaging allows you to accurately dose the substance.

A high-quality extract will preserve the full range of components found in the plant. This form is often called full-spectrum which refers to the full cannabinoid spectrum maintained. This extract and it is the core component used to create all other CBD products.

How is CBD Extract Made?

One of several available extraction methods is used to derive a thick, oily substance from the cannabis plant. What makes an extract a 'CBD' extract is the cannabis it is sourced from. Extracts used to create CBD products are exclusively extracted from hemp sources that are high in CBD and low in THC. Similar extracts could be sourced from marijuana with different cannabinoid levels.

When a low-temperature extraction method like supercritical CO2 extraction is used, the resulting raw extract will contain the acid form of the cannabinoids including cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA). These acid forms are not 'activated' and thus do not interact with the body the same way that the non-acid forms do.

Through the process of decarboxylation, the cannabinoids are heated and 'activated' which removes the acid molecule from the cannabinoid. In the case of cannabidiol, this turns the acid form (CBDA) into the active CBD form. These activated molecules interact differently than the acid forms. For example, THCA is actually non-psychoactive, unlike THC which is.

There are some emerging studies that point to the acid forms of various cannabinoids providing additional health benefits. The research is limited, but the following benefits may be linked to CBDA:

  • Anti-Psychosis Effects (R)
  • Reduced Inflammation (R)
  • Reduced Nausea & Vomiting (R)
  • Anti-Cancer Effects (R, R)

Through further filtering and winterizing the plant material, waxes, and other fatty acids are further removed leaving you with a more purified form of extract. This process increases the concentration of CBD in the extract.

How are CBD Extracts Used?

An extract is the most potent form of CBD medicine. This extract is used placed under the tongue via sublingual application. This is one of the most effective methods of ingesting a CBD product.

Extracts are also used to create all other CBD product types including:

  • Mixed with a carrier oil to create a CBD oil tincture or capsules.
  • Used in Edibles
  • Used in Topicals or Transdermal Patches
  • Used in Suppositories
  • Further processed into an isolate
